The Arpeggio Core Module includes a category based content and navigation management system that allows the administrative user to create and control all navigation and content within the Arpeggio managed site. Using drop down menus to make the tasks easy, an administrator can create new links, add or remove search criteria, and group and organize content. The category system is administered in several screens, and permissions for what can be edited by which level of user can be varied.
To add a new navigation link, the administrator would start with the "Add New Category or Sub Category" menu. The screen shot at right shows a view of the menu for doing this.
Of course, pre-planning is important to continue the usability of the site, but the administrator can make certain pages active or visible at will. Four levels of menu navigation using Dynamic HTML are available using this system for main end user navigation. For more advanced deeper sites, a secondary navigation system can be added which uses advanced Flash database communications... of course, the same flexibility and ease of use are available using the advanced system as well. The administrator would not notice that they have switched to the Flash based system. This is made possible by the advanced Arpeggio Design & Layout Manager and Database foundations of the sites created within the Arpeggio system.
Once a navigation and content category system is established, it is easy to add content, or pages, within the system. A category tree is used to allow the addition of content pages to the site. An example of the category tree, taken from the Arpeggio site itself, is visible to the left. Using standard interface tools, such as the small plus sign next to a category, the administrator clicks on the icon to expand the desired part of the tree. The links to the categories, when clicked, open the category editor, and allow the administrator to link specific content to the category. For end users of the site, the navigation shows up as normal links, placed on the site according to the template design for that specific site.
At left you can also see categories not pertaining to the end user navigation. These categories are available only to high level site administrators, and allow the addition of functions included in optional modules of the Arpeggio suite of tools, as well as functions related to search criteria for end users.
Categories can be active or inactive, and also can be end user visible or not. Obviously, making a category visible to the end user places a link in the appropriate parent category for the now visible sub category. Of course, this is not desired for categories that exist for search criteria, or other functional aspects of the site. Active Status indicates that the category is live, regardless of whether it is visible to the end user. This is used, for example, when a site has a forum, but wants to make the forum live only at certain times, or when a calendar function needs to be taken down for some reason. Standard Administrative users only have access to the categories related to the end user navigation, although a variety of permission schemes are available using the User Manager functions of the Core Module.
